2023 Berlin-Paris-Arles
From the streets of Berlin to the Recontres Le’Arles International Photography Festival in the ancient Roman city of Arles in the South of France.
We commence our tour in Berlin - for workshops and visits to galleries and musuems, cultural sites and landmark locations to photography. Travelling to Paris we explore the city through iconic cultural locations (some known, some new discoveries), including a series of workshops and lectures on photographic history and theory. We conclude in Arles for the famous International Festival of Photography.
Berlin, Germany
Day 1 - Berlin, Germany
Our first day is arrival, settle in and set up. After resetting our body clocks, we do a quick check on gear and finalise any last minute travel advice and ways of working on location. We also setup our communication systems and ensure everyone is connected and linked into our online system.
Dinner at a traditional German restaurant and some getting to know you activities to break the ice.
(Relaxed lounge conversations, bed, or….. Saturday night in Berlin; cafe culture, bars and iconic Berlin Night Clubs!!)
Day 2 - Berlin, Germany
A Walking tour of central Berlin, key sites and strategies for exploring and photographing the street. We visit contemporary locations and transplant ourselves into the history of West Berlin, the site of the Wall, Potsdam Platz, Friedrichstraße and the Brandenburg Gate. From bullet holes in old walls to a vibrant international culture - for a photographer on the street, Berlin has it all.
Casual pre-dinner drinks followed by a lecture on German Deadpan Photography.
Dinner at a classic German Beer Hall.
Day 3 - Berlin, Germany
East Berlin and the Stasi Museum. We visit key sites in East Berlin, explore the architecture and outdoor museums, and take a guided tour of the infamous Stasi Museum. Set your ISO on High and capture some great images of untouched rooms and prison cells from the time of the iron curtain.
Dinner in the hotel with a reflect and review session, followed by one on one consultations.
Day 4 - Berlin, Germany
Today is a gallery and museum day. We visit C/O Berlin, the Helmut Newton Foundation, commerical galleries around Mitte, ending with a guided tour of Jarvis Dooney gallery by the director and curator. Get to know some local photographers and curators - we may see them again in Arles!
Paris, France
Day 5 - Berlin, Germany to Paris, France
Travel by fast train from Berlin to Paris. Once in Paris we rest for the afternoon before dinner at a local restaurant, orientation information, followed by optional wine tasting at o-chateau (selected due to its extensive list of wines by the glass (over 50), managed through a special system of CO2 to maintain taste.
Day 6 - Paris, France
A gallery and musuem day walking the streets of Paris and visiting photographic galleries. Each of the galleries provides a unique perspective on the history of photography, with links to some of the most iconic masters of photography.
We end the day with a group dinner, followed by casual reflections on work and a Q&A session on our Paris project
Day 7 - Paris, France
A day of art and photography. A photographic wondering around Paris, with a stop over at the Centre Pompidou in central Paris. The focus is on contemporary art (expanded beyond photography to include scultpture, painting, installation art and media arts).

Day 8 - Paris, France
Project work, Paris street photography, a morning in the Marais and Bastille districts, followed by an afternoon in Montmartre, Sacre-Coeur Basilica and the surrounding districts.
Day 9 - Paris, France
Free day to explore Paris, shopping, eating and seeing the sites. Options include the Lourve, Musee de’Orsay or Eiffle Tower.
Arles, France
The Rencontres le’Arles (Arles Photography Festival) is our final destination. Situated in the beautiful southern region of France, Arles is a city of ancient history, cobblestone laneways and a vibrant festival culture. Vincent Van Gogh moved here for the light, colour and harmony of the country - something we explore through our photographic tours and workshops.
Day 10 - Paris, France to Arles, France
Travel by fast train (the French countryside at 200kms/hr!) from Paris to Arles. Once in Arles take a swim in the hotel pool or relax in the sun before taking an evening walk into the city centre, complete with narrow cobblestone streets, boutique gift shops and a fully operational Roman colosseum. Dinner in a local cafe in the vibrant city square.
Day 11 - Arles, France
Rencontres de’Arles festival exploration, visit the Fondation Vincent van Gogh, walking tour of the old city by sunset
Day 12 - Arles, France
Light, Architecture & History walking/shooting tour (am), Rencontres de’Arles festival highlights (pm). Optional Portfolio Reviews by festival curators/artists/photographers.
Day 13 - Arles, France
Rencontres de’Arles festival exploration / Dinner & close, highlights and artist talks. Evening bullfight* (a contemporary French version where the matadors ‘tag’ the bull rather than kill it).
Day 12 - Arles, France
Departure breakfast, then our tour concludes and we depart from Arles to Paris for flights home or onwards to a personal destination.
